“We are looking at a society increasingly dependent on machines, yet decreasingly capable of making or even using them effectively.”
- Douglas Rushkoff, Program or Be Programmed: Ten Commands for a Digital Age
The purpose of this workshop is to encourage students to make machines from scratch.
Participants learn about the working of several fundamental elements of machines such as levers, pulleys, wheel & axle, linkages, cams & followers, bearings, motors, hydraulics, etc. They then apply what they have learnt about the basic building blocks to design and make machines of their own.
Besides the science that students learn, we believe that being able to make things on their own greatly improves confidence and the sense of self-worth. And of course, it is great fun!
